Statement on Black Lives Matter and Justice:
The Steering Committee of Rural Oregon Climate Political Action Committee stands with all those seeking justice in cities and small towns across the nation in our utter disgust and condemnation of the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, and countless other black Americans, Indigenous people, and people of color at the hands of police officers.
The systemic devaluing of the lives of people of color, the poor, and those not in power is a social and environmental justice issue that has plagued the United States throughout its history. As we continue to provide a voice for rural Oregonians on climate action, we must understand the interconnected nature of social and environmental justice and our duty to confront injustice in all its incipient forms.
As Robert F. Kennedy said, “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
